Does Your Business Need a Social Media Campaign? The Two Sides of the Controversy…

Are you still wondering what the benefits of a social media campaign would be to your business? Has the dispute over the advantage of a social media campaign left you unsure about what action to take?

This article will give you some insight into this issue and provide some points to consider in deciding what is the best strategy for your business.

Social Media (SM) enables people to interact and supports the need for social connection. The typical tools of SM include Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

There are two sides of the dispute over the real benefits of SM to businesses:

Proponents say:
Businesses can no longer ignore SM. It is exploding with participation. As a result, it is getting more difficult to run a business online without noticing and utilizing SM and social networking.

Opponents say:
The return on investment on a social media campaign is difficult to determine, and social media strategy is very labor-intensive. Some people think social media is all about conversations not conversions.

My position is that success with an SM campaign is dependent on the business niche and the execution.

The success of your social media campaign will depend on:

1.  Your objectives
2.  Your target audience
3.  Your time, and money

1.  What are your goals?  What do you want to accomplish with SM?

You must have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish with your SM campaign, and you must be able to assess your results.

2.  Who is your audience?

You should know your target market and their needs before you implement a social media campaign. Then you should targret your audience and determine which sites are most closely related to your business, company or product.

3.  Do you have time or money?

There is no charge to set up an account on most SM sites. However, you will need to invest time to respond to visitors’ questions, to make posts, and to track activity and results, unless you hire a virtual assistant to manager your SM sites.

In conclusion, a social media campaign is a powerful, low cost, promotional strategy that should be integrated into the marketing mix to generate traffic to your site or business.  However, success with this campaign is dependent on whether your business niche is right for this marketing media and whether you implement the social media campaign properly.
